This Would Have Made The Movie Ten Times Better

Unfortunately, it's kind of a scientific impossibility.

For Whatever Reason...

...I found this to be poignant (click to view larger; you know how it works).

Well, That's One Way to Do It

Judy Garland, Jack Haley, Ray Bolger and Burt Lahr do not fuck around.

Fun Facts

Fun Fact: Hitler had an invisible friend named Möckey Maus.

Nostalgia

God dammit, does this picture makes me miss the Northwest...

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 6

My profound thought of the day: there is something very dislocating about the fact that Harold Lloyd and Adolf Hitler share the same birthday (and only a scant four years apart, to boot).

Stirring up the Shit Pot

This is one of my personal favorite hobbies. It must run in the family. There's nothing like fanning the flames of controversy.

It's That Man Again

Pimping ain't easy, but somebody's gotta do it. And I can think of very few people who are better suited to the job than Eddie Cantor.

Point of interest: the blonde at Eddie's right smiling impishly at the camera is, I believe, a very young (and probably not very legal) Betty Grable. Personally I think she looks much better here than with the bad 40s hair she had when she became famous, but that's just me.

The Nighthawks

"The Nighthawks" is a famous piece of American painting by Edward Hopper. Hopper began the painting shortly after the bombing of Pearl Har... wait, who in the hell is that guy?

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 5

The pretentious classicist in me abhors this, but my inner nerd thinks this is the greatest thing ever. Katanas make everything better. Even Grand Hotel, which in a perfect world would end in a stylishly-choreographed swordfight between Flaemmchen and Grusinskaya in the lobby of the hotel (with Flaemmchen winning, naturally). Not that the plot of the film really provides for such a scene, but it still would have been fantastic. And stop staring at me like that.

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 4

When I grow up, I want to be like Douglas Pearce. He's one of my heroes right now. I've been enjoying The Rule of Thirds immensely, and I'm definitely going to start exploring Death in June's discography.

On a thoroughly unrelated note, I recently watched Of Human Bondage and The Cococanuts. I will try to put together reviews of these two films in something vaguely resembling a timely manner.

De Religionis

Though it probably makes me a traitor to both camps, I still can't see why religion and science are so incompatible.

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 3

I think that a large part of the the reason that I like cloche hats so much is that they remind me of helmets. They appeal to my inner fascist. Just think of it--an unstoppable army of iron-disciplined flappers, conquering the farthest corners of the earth, crushing all resistance (and looking damned good doing it, too)!

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 2

My mother always warned me about this.

Non Sequiturs, Ep. 1

I have no idea who drew this, but they are awesome. Bonus points if you can identify all the characters.
